There are two different statuses for an instrument that can be configured from the back office interface. You can navigate to an instrument by selecting Instrument Management in the main menu and then the instrument which you would like to manage. Then click Edit in the action menu for the instrument and the following screen will show:
The first status item named Status sets the trading permission of the instrument and the second one called Visible Status decides which role can see the instrument.
Open means that the instrument is visible in the customer front end, advisor front end, and the back office interface.
Open (Partner) means that the instrument is visible on the advisor front end and the back office interface and not on the customer front end.
Open (Admin) means that the instrument will only be visible on the back-office interface.
